At Springfield Secondary, STEM Education is guided by a vision to develop Future-Ready Learners with STEMpathy - students who blend scientific and technological skills with empathy, creativity, and a sense of responsibility towards society and the environment. Through a rich array of STEM initiatives, students progress from being inspired to explore, to aspiring towards meaningful goals, and ultimately excelling as innovative problem-solvers. Our programmes nurture curiosity, creativity, and the courage to be the change, while building critical, adaptive, and inventive thinking skills. Students learn to communicate and collaborate effectively, harness information wisely, and appreciate diverse cultures and perspectives. Our STEM-Applied Learning Programme (STEM-ALP) goes beyond the classroom, connecting STEM knowledge across subjects and honing critical thinking skills. We provide a dynamic environment where students can unleash their imagination, applying STEM concepts to solve real-world problems. Through this programme, students gain a deeper appreciation for their learning by experiencing STEM in community and industry settings. We also aim to illuminate the exciting pathways available in post-secondary STEM education and career opportunities.

In the ALP classroom, our dedicated educators craft STEM learning experiences rooted in authentic contexts, fostering the "3 Cs" in our students: to be Curious, Creative, and be the Change.

Secondary 1 ALP: Science on Your Plate - A Health & Food Science Adventure

In our Secondary 1 Applied Learning Programme (ALP), students dive into the fascinating world of Health and Food Sciences—connecting what they learn in the classroom to their everyday lives. Through interactive lessons, experiments, and hands-on activities, students explore questions such as: What makes food healthy or unhealthy? and How do our food choices impact our overall well-being?

They learn to evaluate nutritional information, understand the science behind ingredients, and make informed decisions about what they eat. Beyond just theory, the programme encourages students to apply scientific concepts—such as digestion, energy needs, and the role of nutrients—to real-life scenarios. By the end of the year, students will not only be more aware of their own eating habits but also better equipped to take charge of their health, making choices that support both their bodies and their lifestyles.

Secondary 2 ALP: Growing the Future in the City

How do you grow enough food when space is running out? Our Secondary 2 students took on this challenge in their Applied Learning Programme by stepping into the shoes of urban farmers. With Biology and Food Science as their guide, they explored how plant nutrition connects to real-world food production and sustainability—right here in land-scarce Singapore.

From vertical gardens to creative farm layouts, students brainstormed, designed, and built models of innovative farming systems aimed at maximising crop yield in the smallest possible space. Along the way, they tackled real-life problems urban farmers face, applying skills in scientific investigation, engineering design, and even a bit of Math magic with angles and measurements.

The learning didn’t stop in the classroom. Students headed out on an industrial learning journey to some of Singapore’s most inspiring urban farms, seeing how ideas come to life and gaining fresh inspiration for their own designs. Who knows? The next big breakthrough in sustainable farming might just start here in our Sec 2 ALP!
