DSA Overview

1. Direct School Admission (DSA) Exercise

The DSA-Sec Exercise was introduced by the Ministry of Education in 2004 to promote holistic education and provide students an opportunity to demonstrate a more diverse range of achievements and talents in seeking admission to a secondary school. Under this DSA-Sec Exercise, participating schools will be able to select Primary Six (P6) students for admission to Secondary One. The selection will be based on their achievements and talents before the Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE) results are released.

2. School Vision

Springfield’s school vision is “Future-Ready Learners with a Caring Heart and the Confidence to Lead”. In Springfield, we believe in providing our students with opportunities to develop their sporting talent and leadership, along with school representation. Our DSA talent areas of Rockwall climbing, Floorball and Taekwondo will provide the platform for the students to achieve these.

(a) Rockwall Climbing

The Springfield rock wall is an outstanding Tampines landmark that has captured the attention of many passing by. Built in 1995, it was one of the first outdoor rockwall in a secondary school. Over the years, thousands of our pupils have learnt the basics of rockwall climbing and many have excelled in the sport. Our climbers have always been recognized as the most rugged and robust pupils in the school. Rockwall climbing has developed mental strength and inculcated qualities such as integrity, resilience, and perseverance. With the current emphasis on Character & Citizenship Education, rockwall climbing will be an excellent avenue for the inculcation of values and provision of social-emotional learning.

Secondary 1/2 pupils will be equipped with the basic knowledge, skills, and confidence in rockwall climbing; climbing, rope ascending and abseiling during Lower Secondary Physical Education (PE) Programme. They will be able to appreciate the rigours of the sport and also the intrinsic value of climbing. Given the opportunity to participate, pupils can be engaged in self-discovery and cultivation of values. Secondary 2 pupils will be given the opportunity to attain the Singapore National Climbing Standard Rockwall Climbing Certification Level I.

(b) Floorball

This sport was introduced in 2007 in part due to the potential talent of Springfield students. Along with the passion and technical expertise of the teachers, the School was able to achieve significant results. The team is now known for their all-round skills, teamwork, and resilience. Students are also given opportunities to organize our very own inter-school floorball competition annually.

Inter-school / organized competitions play a vital part in the long-term excellence and sustainability of the floorball. A key feature is Springfield Blast! - an annual inter-school floorball competition organized by Springfield. Students are given leadership opportunities during the organization of this competition. This will be a platform for talent development and maturity, helping them in their holistic development.

(c) Taekwondo

With the official introduction of Taekwondo in the National School Games in 2009, Springfield Taekwondo was provided with greater scope for involvement and achievements. Participating students are given various participation opportunities ranging from team display to sparring categories. Grading assessment is integrated into the CCA to promote rigour and professionalism. Various aesthetics based activities like taekwondo aerobics is also added to enhance the overall participation in the sport.

The TKD CCA programme will support and reinforce the interest and ability of pupils. There will be various competitions, training camps, community involvement projects and leadership training for pupils. The TKD CCA programme will serve to bring about strong values and the desired outcomes of education in our students.

(d) STEM

Springfield’s Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) programme focuses on STEMpowering lifelong learners and exemplary leaders with STEMpathy. Through problem-based learning and authentic STEM experiences, we aim to ignite curiosity and enable our students to appreciate the relevance of their learning beyond the classroom. We develop our students to make connections and apply their creativity, communicate effectively and work collaboratively, and actively contribute to the community and society, so as to make a positive difference to the lives of others.

At Springfield, we inspire the interest in STEM in all students through our Applied Learning Programme, which is focused on Health and Food Science, as well as a STEM integrated IP Curriculum and transdisciplinary, real-world STEM-related projects. Students subsequently aspire to deepen their interest and gain further exposure via in-house programmes like STEMania, and national programmes like STEM Playground.

Students who apply through DSA will be given opportunities to excel in the area of STEM and further their passion and skillsets through learning journeys, work attachments and internships to STEM-related organisations for opportunities to apply their knowledge and gain greater awareness of the range of STEM-related job opportunities and industries. They will also be able to join our EcoSTEM Club CCA, and participate in STEM research programmes and national competitions with mentorship from our teachers and Pathfinders in relevant STEM-related organisations and agencies.

DSA Exercise 2026

In Springfield, we nurture students to be lifelong learners and exemplary leaders. We invite Primary 6 students with sporting talent to join our school through the DSA Exercise.

SELECTION & APPLICATION INFORMATION

(A) SELECTION CRITERIA

1. Students who have:
   • achievements or exhibit potential in the following areas: Rockwall Climbing, Taekwondo, Floorball and STEM
   • passionate in one of the following areas: Rockwall Climbing, Taekwondo, Floorball and STEM
   •good character and leadership skills / taken on leadership position in schools

2. Applications for 2026 DSA-Secondary Exercise will open from 6th May 2026, 11 a.m. and the selection process will be conducted at our school.

Please note that meeting all the criteria does not guarantee that the student will be shortlisted/ given an offer. Applicants who do not have prior experience may also apply. The school will assess applicants based on the selection criteria, which may include assessing the potential of the applicants.

(B) APPLICATION PROCESS

Application for DSA-Sec can be submitted through the online DSA-Sec Portal. The application is free-of charge and will be open from 6 May 2026, 11 a.m. to 2 June 2026, 4.30 p.m. For more details, please refer to MOE website.

Parents and students are encouraged to choose schools wisely based on the student’s aptitudes and strengths, bearing in mind the schools’ academic and non-academic requirements, and the programmes available to develop the area of talent.

(C) IMPORTANT DATES TO NOTE

Students who are successfully admitted to the school via DSA are expected to honour their commitment to the school, and participate in the activities related to the talent they are selected for from year 1-4.

Reflections from Our Students

I used to be in Wushu in Primary School but had confidence issues so I dropped out of the CCA. However, the past experiences with Martial Arts gave me an advantage in terms of flexibility.

In SFSS Taekwondo, I was completely new to the sport and did not achieve much in Sec 1, but through my peers and seniors, I had gained more confidence and started to work harder in Taekwondo, resulting in me improving tremendously.

I was offered a CCA Leader Role in Sec 2 which inspired me to achieve more. I then ran for CCA Captainship in Sec 3 with the encouragement from my Seniors and Teachers, and managed to win the honour of taking on the role of Captain of the CCA.

I had attained silver and bronze medals in Sec 1 and after putting in more effort to train and improve, I consistently won gold medals every year after.
Taekwondo boosted my confidence throughout the 4 years; I started with a White belt in Sec 1 and progressed to a Red Belt in Sec 4, and had become more disciplined, resilient and confident.

LOH JAVIER [SEC 4 COMPASSION] (2019) - CAPTAIN OF TAEKWONDO TEAM

I was never the most hardworking or smartest person in the room but Outdoor Pursuits Club, OPC was my motivation to try and become the best version of myself. I joined Springfield with the sole purpose of joining OPC as I heard the teachers and coaches are very supportive and the members are very committed and motivated. I had been climbing for a while but I never had a team backing me during competitions. OPC is a team in which everyone is supported regardless of strength or skill. We celebrate highs together and work through lows.

Through my experience in OPC, I have reignited my passion for climbing and now am in Victoria Junior College representing the school at local competitions. OPC has grown my resilience, compassion and responsibility. While in the CCA, I was appointed climbing master. I had to help coach the team when our coach was not around and had to encourage the team during competitions.

Thanks to OPC, I've grown to thrive for excellence not only in my sport but in my studies and all other aspects of my life.

Back in primary school, I was really a rebellious child, always getting into unnecessary trouble with the other kids in school. Back at home, I would not listen to my parents and always disobeyed them. I started to change for the better when I was in secondary school due to my CCA, Outdoor Pursuits Club (OPC). I started taking up leadership roles to guide my other fellow classmates/ teammates. It was also at OPC that I fell in love with Rockwall Climbing.

There, I learnt to be disciplined and focused. Why discipline and focus? Simply because it has kept me on track with what I have planned for myself. Success doesn’t come easy. So knowing that I have that clear goal and sticking to the plan has helped me stay the path when representing Springfield and finally, Singapore.

Besides that, I also learnt to believe in the process and myself. If you’re going to have doubts in yourself, you wouldn’t break new barriers. I am thankful to those who have helped me along the way. I always have them at the back of my head even though I don’t tell them how much I’ve appreciated their support and guidance! Without the values and lessons I’ve learnt until now, I wouldn’t become who I am today. Someone who ensures that he sticks to a plan or goal and does not get distracted by anyone or anything.

MARK CHAN [5B] (2017) - NATIONAL ATHLETE & OLYMPIC HOPEFUL IN ROCKWALL CLIMBING

Floorball has been my hobby since Primary 3. The fast-paced game encourages me to make decisions quickly and practice communication among my teammates in court. I was elected the Vice-Captain and did my best to lead by example. I am thankful for my Teachers-In-Charge, my Coach, and especially my Teammates for being a part of my Springfield floorball journey.
My passion for Floorball has yet to fade. When I was an Nanyang Polytechnic pursuing a Diploma in Sport and Wellness Management, I continued to pursue my passion in Floorball by playing for U Sports Portege FC and for the Polytechnic. Certainly, the four years playing floorball has helped me in becoming someone who is more resilient to challenges, confident to stand out, and disciplined to juggle various responsibilities.

I found out about floorball during my primary school time. Floorball was not a popular choice back then, but I still wanted to join as I wanted to follow the footsteps of my brother. I went for the trials and ironically to me, the sport was fun and intense. I loved how fast paced and intense the game is. It really caught my eye.

After the trials, a strong passion for floorball started to develop within me as I knew that this was something that I liked. I was then selected to represent my primary school. When it was my time to graduate from my primary school, I lost passion in floorball due to the pandemic and a year of not being able to play. I joined Springfield Secondary School after discovering the school has floorball as a CCA. When I was offered to lead their floorball boys' team in Secondary Two, I straight away took up the chance.

Throughout my journey in both primary and secondary school, floorball has been instrumental in shaping my character. It instilled in me the values of leadership, resilience, and teamwork, proving that with dedication and effort, one can surpass expectations. Despite the obstacles that may arise, I remain committed to continuing my floorball journey with my secondary school team.
